Regnier III "Longhals" Count of Hainault

Born [abt.915] in Hainault (now part of Belgium)
Died 973 in Bohemia

Notes:
He and his brother Rodolphe took part in the rebellion of his uncle Gilbert, Duke of Lorraine against Henry the Fowler of Saxony with the support of King Louis IV. When Gilbert was killed in 939, Regnier had to pledge fealty to King Otto the Great.

He rebelled and allied himself with King Louis IV of France. King Otto sent duke Hermann of Swabia to quell the rebellion in 944.

Otto appointed Conrad the Red as duke of Lorraine, who tried to diminish the power of Reginar but then rebelled against Otto himself. Reginar used the dowry of (aunt) Queen Gerberge, Otto's sister (and also church property) to support the rebellion. (Aunt Gerberge married secondly Louis IV of France after the death of her first husband Gilbert of Lorraine)

In 953, Bruno, Archbishop of Cologne, who was next appointed duke of Lorraine, defeated Reginar. Reginar refused to submit and was exiled to Bohemia, where he died.
