1882 - Invented the vertical turbine pump for water well drilling, later adapted for oil wells. In 1903 together with Mr. P. D. Bowler formed the Layne and Bowler Company.
1908 Layne and Bowler Company contracted with city of Jennings, Louisiana to drill a new water well.
1910 US Census - age 44, living in Justice Precinct 1, Harris Co., Tx with wife Bertha (44), children Lloyd (19) and Ollyn (16), Samuel A. Basye (83), Mary E. Basye (81), Della Eagletaun (25), Peter Eagletaun (24), E. H. Meyer (30) and Walter Howell (20)
1914 moved with family to Los Angeles, relocated the Layne and Bowler Company
1916 Layne and Bowler was involved in a patent infringement lawsuit which reached the Supreme Court, which was decided to be a state jurisdiction.
1920 US Census - age 54, living in Los Angeles Township City Precinct 725, Los Angeles Co., CA with wife Bertha A. Layne (56), Bertha's niece Ethel L. Basye (37) and Nellie B. Chapman (40)
1921 filed patent for "Apparatus for separating and collecting fluids in wells " United States Patent 1382295
1925 together with Albert L. Roco filed patent for Rotary-pump mechanism, United States Patent 1522980
