In 1242, Geoffrey participates with his father in the war against King Louis IX of France, in which they beat a hasty retreat to Bordeaux. Hugh and Isabella lose much of their land in France and do homage to Louis IX. The humiliation causes Isabella to retrete to Fontvraud Abbey where she eventually dies, and the remaining siblings - whose inheritance was forfeit go to live with their half-brother Henry III in England.
